Cosmetics, perfume, hair spray, and sun block all contain chemicals that can dramatically dull the luster of a pearl. The natural acids in body oils and perspiration can also damage pearls in the same way. It is best to put your pearls on at least 30 minutes after applying any personal care products.
Wiping the pearls with a soft cloth after you wear them will ensure that they remain free of harmful build up of these compounds. Should your pearls become soiled, jewelry cleaner for pearls or jewelry cleaner that states "Safe for Pearls" is recommended. Never place your pearls in a steam or ultrasonic cleaner. Do not use solutions that contain ammonia or harsh detergents. Abrasive cloths or cleaning products will scratch the nacre on the pearl and make the luster dull. Never store your pearls in any type of plastic bag. Plastic can emit a chemical that will cause the surface of the Pearl to deteriorate.
Always keep your pearls separated from hard jewelry items to prevent them from being scratched. Pearls are best kept in a soft cloth pouch or a soft lined box. Should your pearls become damp or wet, pat them dry with a soft towel and allow them to dry completely before wearing them again as wet silk may stretch. Remember that pearls are about 4% water and can dry out. The humidity in a safe deposit box is often too dry for pearls.
If you wear your pearls often, they should be restrung about once a year to prevent strand breakage. I recommend that you have your pearls restrung with silk.
Wear your pearls! It is good for them.
